A Feasibility Study of Case Management by Psychiatric Care Providers to Improve Access to Cancer Screening for Patients with Schizophrenia in Usual Clinical Practice

Intervention(s)The target of the intervention is the participating psychiatric hospitals/psychiatric care providers. To enable participating hospitals to provide case management to encourage patients to undergo cancer screening, researchers will provide support (intervention) to the hospitals through interactive assistance, adapt and tailor to context, organization of clinician implementation teams, and development and distribution of educational materials. In the participating hospitals, psychiatric care providers will provide cancer screening recommendations to outpatients with schizophrenia as part of their routine clinical practice. The contents and targets of the cancer screening recommendations to be implemented by the participating facilities are as follows: FY2022: Provide case management to encourage patients aged 40, 50, and 60 years old to undergo cancer screening. The primary recommendation will be for colorectal cancer screening. FY2023: Provide simple recommendations using flyers for patients aged 40-69.

Primary OutcomeThe proportion of patients who received case management to encourage participation in cancer screening in FY2022
Secondary OutcomeColorectal cancer screening rate in FY2021 and FY2023 (*evaluated in some patients with consent) Potential barriers and facilitators in implementing the case management to encourage participation in cancer screening The proportion of patients who received a simple recommendation using flyers in FY2023 Description of the process of implementing the intervention in the participating facilities The proportion of patients receiving cancer screenings (colorectal, lung, gastric, breast, and cervical cancer screening), proportion of patients requiring close examination, and proportion of patients receiving close examination in FY2019-FY2026 (*evaluated in some patients with consent)

Include criteria[Inclusion criteria for participating hospitals] (1) Any psychiatric hospital where written consent for participation in the study can be obtained from the facility director or the head of the outpatient department. [Inclusion criteria for psychiatric care providers to be interviewed] (1) Those who is judged by the facility director or the head of the outpatient department to be involved in cancer screening recommendations and appropriate to participate in the interview. (2) Those who has given consent to participate in the study.
Exclude criteria[Exclusion criteria for participating hospitals] (1) Hospitals that have expressed their refusal to participate in the study. [Exclusion criteria for psychiatric care providers to be interviewed] (1) Those who have expressed their refusal to participate in the interview. (2) Those who are judged inappropriate to participate by the director of the facility or the head of the outpatient department for other reasons.
