A Study on the Effectiveness of Oral Self-Care Education

• Intervention(s): An educational intervention using an oral self-care education pamphlet (Oral Health Habits Program) will be conducted for 30 minutes to compare the condition before and one month after the education. The educational items included (1)Oral flail and aspiration pneumonia, (2)Oral observation and oral cleaning methods, (3)Salivary gland massage and Oral exercises with breathing techniques.After the educational intervention, oral self-care behaviors will be encouraged and evaluated after one month.

Outcome(s)

• Primary Outcome: Oral function: tongue pressure

Secondary Outcome

Oral hygiene: degree of tongue coating, oral bacteria level, oral cleanliness
Oral function: oral dryness, tongue and lip motor function
Oral health concerns and perceptions (questionnaire)
Oral self-care behavior (questionnaire)

Key inclusion & exclusion criteria

• Age minimum: >= 50age old
• Age maximum: Not applicable
• Gender: Both

Include criteria

1) Patients over 50 years old with chronic respiratory disease
2) Patients attending the Department of Respiratory Medicine, University of A Hospital
3) Patients whose condition is stable and approved by the physician.
4) Patients who are able to clean their mouth by themselves.

Exclude criteria

1)Patients undergoing treatment for oral and swallowing problems
2)Patients with communication difficulties due to dementia
3)Patients who have difficulty breathing when speaking or opening their mouth.
