Effect of music appreciation before bedtime on elderly inpatient's subjective sleep quality and emotional instability

Intervention(s) | A randomized controlled trial will be conducted with control and music appreciation groups. The control group: Participants sleep without appreciating music before bedtime. The music appreciation group: Participants appreciate music in an hour before bedtime for consecutive 7 days. In both conditions, subjects answer the following questionnaires during daytime on the 3rd, 6th, and 9th days: OSA sleep inventory MA version and the question about their feelings. All participants answer pre-intervention questions during the informed consent process. The music appreciation group answers post-intervention questions after completing the entire process. |
Outcome(s)
Primary Outcome | The measurements are subjective feeling of sleep and emotional instability. Subjective feeling of sleep is assessed by OSA sleep inventory MA version. Emotional instability is assessed by 2nd group questions from Jikaku-sho shirabe. |

Secondary Outcome | The following questions are asked to understand the attributes of the research subjects and gather information on their music appreciation habits and impressions of the music. Before intervention Age, sex, past medical history, the presence of taking sleep medicine, the presence of habits of music appreciation before bedtime, usual sleep duration, subjective sleep quality, and any additional comments or concerns. After intervention (the music appreciation group only) Subject's impressions of the music and any additional comments or concerns. |

Include criteria | Patients aged 65 to 90 who are hospitalized in a private room for 10 days or more. |
Exclude criteria | Individuals who have subjective symptoms or treatments such as Narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia, Kleine Levin Syndrome, circadian rhythm sleep disorder, sleep apnea syndrome, restless legs syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, somnambulism, sleep terrors, REM sleep behavior disorder, mental illness, other sleep-disturbing symptoms, and hearing impairment. Those who take sleeping pills and/or pills that makes them drowsy. Those who may be difficult to understand the informed consent by themself. |
