Examination of aroma inhalation effect on post oral surgery nausea

Intervention(s)Inhale aroma essential oils (blends) of lavender, ginger and peppermint diluted to 1% at the time of postoperative nausea. The inhalation time is 2 minutes, followed by another 2 minutes of inhalation after assessment of nausea severity. The control group uses only purified water for similar inhalation.

Outcome(s)

Primary OutcomeAmount of change in the severity of nausea with and without aroma essential oil at the time of postoperative nausea.
Secondary OutcomeAntiemetics use rate, drug name and dose used, patient satisfaction, adverse events.

Include criteria1. Patients scheduled to undergo oral surgery under general anesthesia at Surgical Center or Center for Oral Surgery of Hokkaido University Hospital 2. Age 20+ 3. ASA physical status class 1 or 2 4. Written informed consent
Exclude criteria1. Lack of judgment, such as intellectual disability 2. Allergy to the aroma essential oil 3. Olfactory disorder 4. Hemorrhagic diathesis 5. ICU management after general anesthesia 6. Scheduled to administer intraoperative antiemetic prophylaxis 7. Judged by the primary sponser to be inappropriate as research subjects
